Yes, it should work the same way--but all the information on this list, as well as my limited but consistent experience, says that you cannot successfully associate a profile with a printer (or a scanner) in the Windows 98 Color Management properties--it just doesn't "take". Are you sure you're not using Win98 SE, or at least the upgraded version of Win98?
