RE: The Challenge+ G4 and Athlon

Rafe - I just upgraded to an Athlon 700 on Asus System board. If you give
me the benchmarking program, or specs., I will run them for you. My system
does very well with Photoshop, but I probably need a bit more memory (I have
256m. now and should have 512m. ). Thanks --- John.

Hmm. Interesting letter at that URL there. Talk
about fanning the flames, though...

Look, one of the fundamental differences between
the two camps here is that there really is *no* single
company behind the "Wintel" architecture. With Cyrix
out of the game, the field of CPU manufacturers has narrowed
(too bad) but surely others will emerge to claim a piece
of the market. Whatever happened to NexGen?

The OS market for PCs is, IMHO, too much of a monopoly,
and too heavily dominated by M$. I'd like to see that
change. The real heroes in this battle are Richard
Stallman and Linus Torvalds, who truly "think different."
Apple wasn't the only outfit steamrolled by M$; IBM's
OS2 was also a very worthy contender, in its time.

I really have no idea how an Athlon will compare
to Intel's fastest P-3. I'm rooting for AMD
these days just 'cuz they're working so damned hard
to challenge Intel. The AMD processor on my home
PC delivers a great bang for the buck. I'm rooting
for Linux, too, for similar reasons.

No public response yet to my Photoshop timing measurements.
Whatsupwitdat? ...
