I started with Photoshop 4.0 and bought books for each revision.  The three
most recent that I have found especially useful are (all available from
Amazon.com): (1) Classroom in a Book, Adobe Photoshop 5.5, (2) Photoshop 5
for Windows Bible by Deke McClelland, and (3) Photoshop 5 Artistry by Barry
haynes & Wendy Crumpler.
