Re: VERY Interesting Film Scanner Rumor
<x-flowed>I guess this really is OT here so I'll keep this short. But isn't it
possible that the rumoured new 'scanner' doesn't read traditional film, but
a new-technology medium and this is what's causing the confusion. It's
fairly easy to conceive of a product which uses the concept of film, ie
where an image can be recorded on successive physical rectangles of the
storage medium with the relatively high information density necessary for
high resolution imaging, but which doesn't use classic film emulsion.
Products like rewritable CDs already use the principle whereby information
can be written by one power/type of laser and read by another lower
power/different wavelength device without changing the stored information.
It's not necessarily difficult to imagine extending this general approach
to other applications, albeit with many practical problems to solve. (All

I'm not suggesting that this is necessarily the answer or that the rumour
may not be a hoax, just pointing out, Horatio, that we should perhaps be a
little more open to the principle that new developments and combinations of
already-available technologies may further challenge traditional approaches.

John Dann
