I went through the same evolution - first the software,
then, later, getting the puck.  Yes, I think it was worth
the extra expense.  I just couldn't trust my eyes doing
the visual calibration.

You really get the payoff if you are using Jon Cone's
profiles and forcing your PC into the ColorMatch RGB 1.8
gamma 5000K space.
