<DIV>After reading postings on this list for the last several weeks, I bought a
1200 on 8/20/99.&nbsp; The first print and every other one&nbsp;I have made have
been beyond my expectations.&nbsp; I attribute this success to you folks and the
sharing of your experiences.&nbsp; </DIV>
<DIV>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV>Prior to purchase, I developed a list of potential pitfalls and studied the
setup and solution procedures that could reduce the chances of
problems.&nbsp;&nbsp;In case there are others out there who are hesitating
because of perceived potential problems, a description of my startup
follows:</DIV>
<DIV>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV>System:&nbsp; Pent.II 450; 128megs; 10gigs (7 free);&nbsp; Win98; PS5.5;
Trinitron monitor; Nikon LS-2000 scanner.</DIV>
<DIV>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV>Connection:&nbsp; USB.&nbsp; I was concerned here because of a previous USB
connection problem with another device.&nbsp; Studied the "Start Here" brochure
that came with the printer and followed directions exactly.&nbsp; Everything
worked as described.&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV>Setup and scanning:&nbsp; Followed Ian Lyons recommendations to the
letter.&nbsp; See his article "Using the Photo 750/1200 with PhotoShop 5" at <A
href="http://www.magix.com.sg/users/kltham/";>http://www.magix.com.sg/users/kltham/</A>&nbsp;&nbsp;.&nbsp;
I found the reference from this list.&nbsp; Used Adobe Gamma to set
monitor.&nbsp; Trinitron phosphors: 2.2 gamma: 6500 white point.&nbsp; PS
working space: Adobe&nbsp;RGB (1998).&nbsp; Scanner space set at
RGB.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Usually scan at 300 dpi at 8X10.&nbsp;&nbsp;12 bit scans,
16 passes.&nbsp; Set highlight and shadow prior to scan if possible.&nbsp;
Monitor matches slides quite well.</DIV>
<DIV>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV>PS adjustments:&nbsp; Use curves&nbsp;for color and contrast
adjustment.&nbsp; Unsharp mask&nbsp;on luminosity channel for sharpening.&nbsp;
Save as&nbsp;8 bit .psd &nbsp;file for printing.&nbsp; </DIV>
<DIV>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV>Printing:&nbsp; So far using Photo Paper "New" with Epson inks. Epson
custom settings as per Ian Lyons' article.&nbsp; 8X10 print (18meg file) takes
about 10 minutes.&nbsp; Results are striking.&nbsp; Flesh tones for all races
are right on.&nbsp; Blacks are black.&nbsp; Other colors are very true except
for highly saturated greens and blues which are toned down just a bit.&nbsp; I
attribute this to the fact that the printer's color space does not match the
monitor's and film's spaces.&nbsp; The way I understand it, this mismatch is a
fundamental limitation of this process.&nbsp; With thickness setting at
"+",&nbsp; see some very slight pizza wheel tracks&nbsp;on heavy coverage areas
right after printing.&nbsp; Amazingly, I can not see them after about 20
minutes.&nbsp;  </DIV>
<DIV>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV>As stated, I am a beginner.&nbsp; However, thanks to you, I now have a
solid base from which to explore other inks and papers and other color
management techniques.</DIV>
<DIV>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV>Thanks,</DIV>
<DIV>&nbsp;</DIV>
