My understanding, based on what Fred Keen of Repeat-O-Type (an ink
reseller) had on their website a while back, is that the manufacturer can
refuse to cover the cost of repairing damage done when using ink other than
the recommended ink, if it can be shown that the use of that ink caused the
damage, but cannot "void" the warranty; that is, the warranty remains in
effect for other, "covered" damages for the original duration. If memory
serves, HP lost a court case trying to void a warranty for using 3rd party
ink, based on the Magnuson Act.
