Re: ink comparisons: Epson & Fotonic

On the subject of ink comparisons, I had said I would let the list know about
the gamut comparison of hte Fotonic inks with standard Epson inks. I've been
slow getting this done, and have not gotten the results I want yet, but in
the mean time:

The blacks are very similar (no suprise) and the grays and CMY grays are
virtually identical as well. The pure Cyan and Yellow are very close to
Epson's. The only ink with notably different color is the Magenta which (to
use practical terms instead of Delta-E numbers) has the same lightness value,
but is less saturated, as if you had added about ten percent black, and then
balance the Magenta so it wasn't darker from it... this has effects on a
number of mixed colors. Even mustard yellow are quite off, due to the fact
that they are toned over the Yellow mostly with Magenta. The colors that
usually would be shades of bright orange end up a bit rusty and the reds end
up quite oxblood, if that name is still in use <G>. Custom profiling should
take care of the majority of this, but so far I've not gotten a profile that
will match the color from Epson ink prints. I'll keep working at it as time
allows. Then I'll be able to say more accurately what the inks are actually
capable of. For perspective's sake, I'd say the reds are three quarters of
the way from Lysonic reds to Epson reds.
