Hi, fellow-photographers on this list: Picked up the following info on another list (Painting-2000-digest), which might tempt some more to see the show? Note: this IS ink-jet territory! BM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------- Digital Atelier(TM) Lenticular Printmaking SIGGRAPH/ Seybold Press Release, Seybold 7/30/99 The artists of the Digital Atelier (TM) are exploring one of the hottest new inkjet print processes which uses lenticular lens to create the illusion of depth and motion. The result of their endeavors is an exhibit called "timeXposure: experiments in time, space & movement" which will be on display in their booth #3361 at Seybold San Francisco. It will be previewed at SIGGRAPH 99 in Los Angeles in the Lenticular Development and Roland booths.. While the basics of lenticular imaging have been practiced for over a century, as little as a year ago it would have cost $5000 to create a lenticular print. By working with the software developer and the lens manufacturer, the artists of Digital Atelier(TM), Karin Schminke, Bonny Lhotka and Dorothy Simpson Krause, are able to create images up to 4'x8' with as many as 24 frames. To create lenticular prints, the artists begin by making images with the illusion of projecting or receding space, and/ or animations. Next, a set of variations or frames is created from their source image. Using highly specialized software by Flipsigns, the artists interlace the frames in thin, vertical lines. The resulting image is printed on the high resolution Roland Hi-Fi JET, and a special plastic lens with vertical ridges, or lenticules, is laminated on top. These lenticules allow the viewer to see one frame at a time in succession as his viewpoint changes, creating the illusion of movement and space. In their 1200 square foot Seybold-sponsored booth, the artists will be working with Intergraph computers, Roland HiFi Jet, Epson 3000 and Tektronix Phaser 740 printers. They will be showing work printed on Roland, Rexam and Sentinel substrates with Roland and Lyson inks. The lenticular lenses they use are from MicroLens Technology and Lenticular Development. A 30 page catalog printed by Xerox and a CD produced by Digital Media Group will be available. Acting as liaison between the high tech industry and the fine arts world, the artists of Digital Atelier(TM) explore emerging technologies and provide feedback to developers from the artist's perspective. They also work with artists, museum curators, gallery directors and collectors to share their findings and promote the acceptance of digital processes. An article describing their lenticular explorations will appear in the Fall issue of Digital Fine Arts which will be distributed at Seybold. In these explorations, they have been supported by: Roland DGA Corporation Intergraph Computer Systems Flipsigns MicroLens Technology, Inc. Lenticular Development, Inc. Lyson, Ltd.
