One of the items on the list is to load new work and most definitly optimize them for more efficient transmission. The images you saw were submitted to the original designer for discussion purposes, but he dropped them into the site without any further manipulation. Even so, I'm surprised it took 40 seconds to load the images. My experience is closer to 20 seconds per image when I had a 33.6 modem. The electrons travel faster on some days than others.
