Epson 9000 discussion Group message #1

<x-flowed>On July 12 I had written to the epson-inkjet list: "I'd like to try
and get Epson 9000 owners in touch with each other. If you own an
Epson 9000, or are about to purchase one -- send me an e-mail. I
will send you a list of all the other owners. Together, maybe we can
help each other find some third-party solutions to our problems and
needs."

John Heaton writes "what's wrong with discussing the 9000 here in
this group? After all it is an Epson Printer and we are an Epson
Group, why try to ms tart something somewhere else?"

I totally agree. And I'm not trying to re-invent the "wheel". It's
just that some "wide-format" people do not want to wade through all
the "desk-top" chatter to get to the stuff that really interests them.

I'M WILL LIST THOSE MESSAGES THAT I RECEIVED BELOW, SO THE
"EPSON-INKJET" GROUP WON'T FEEL SLIGHTED:

Dear persons owning the Epson 9000 (or planning to purchase):

A few days ago I mentioned on the "epson-inkjet" discussion group
that I'd be happy to monitor a discussion group concerning people who
owned or were planning to purchase) the Epson 9000. I received
several replies and have listed the messages of those who had
something relevant to say.

I will be sending other information periodically that applies to this
group. Until then, here the relevant responses I received:

From: "Paul Greenberg" <pg@digireef.com>

Hi- I have been running an Epson 9000 since early May and the machine has
performed flawlessly. I could not see why anyone would waste their money on
a Roland unit which uses a modified Epson 3000 print head set up for 6 inks.

Please place my name on the Epson 9k user group set up you mentioned.... I
have been using the printer for everything from posters to GiclŽe output on
all types of media. I am also working with Media Streeet.com and a new
inkset they are producing which will run on the 9000- they have the ink
cartridges for the 9000. The inkset is a combo dye/pigment base. Contact
Norm Levy at Media Stree.com for more info and tell him I sent you! Even
though you guys are 'competitors' I am sure you can work together on this.
1.888.MEDIA-XL is the tel#.

From: Bob Keller <bobkeller@sublimation.com>

I'd love to be added to the list. We've had a 9000 in house for about 6
weeks now. It is running beautifully. We're running our own sublimation
inks through it and can't wait until the the printer becomes readily
available.

From: tommy@tatze.com

We've had an Epson 9000 in our repro house for the last few weeks and it's
starting to work very well. I posted a few messages a while ago asking for
resonance from other users but nothing much came in the way of information.
The way of feeding the machine with data was at first a problem. Our
experience has shown the EFI Fiery solution sold by Epson as a RIP station
doesn't suit our workflow at all (DCS). The BestColor XXL software didn't work
and finally we chose the german CGS O.R.I.S Color Tuner on a Windows NT box.
Very fast and very promising calibration possibilities. It's working out nicely
and at last we're wondering how we stuck with Iris proofs all that time.

Responding to your post about the 9000. Actually, am planning to attend
Siggraph in August to do the research of which machine/ink combination to
buy. Also have been in touch with Allen Takichi Maertz who also is hot to
trot for one of these (allentakichi@earthlink.net) At the moment he is gone
photographing in norther california, but should be back shortly.

My personal goal would be to use the Ilford inks in the 9000. I have been
very pleased with using them in my 3000 so far. On Ilford photogloss paper
the results are outstanding!

My big concern is coming up with dilutions for the Lt Cyan & Lt Magenta.
Also, concerns with how archival such dilutions might be, even with Archiva
Inks. I am in touch with my Ilford rep, but word from him is that the
company has no intention of getting into the piezzo inkjet market just yet.
Also, the light C & M inks are only available at Colorspan in configurations
for their Giclee Maker printer.

Jon Cone will be heading up the Siggraph 2D workshop which I plan on
attending. I think by August things will start shaking out.
