You might even go a step further.  Believe it or not, I've seen the Expression 836XL NEW in open box sale for around $1000.  I believe I saw it at Tech2.  You might give a call to Jerry Peterson there at 1-800-643-0625 to see if he has any more lying around.

I own the 836XL and it is very sweet.  And, the scanning propriatory software that comes with it is just fine for me.  I prefer it to the Silverfast.

PS: (OT for sure) Anyone fed up with your e-mail client might want a look at a very beautiful interface called NeoPlanet.  It's free.
