Dan,

The idea of filter layers is not all that farfetched.  The
late-but-little-lamented Live Picture did its sharpening that way, one
of the better features of the program.  It would be a great solution to
the problem of the discrepancy between the appearance of sharpening
onscreen and the way it actually appears in the print.

Maybe if we ask Russell Williams really nicely......
