If they are aniline dyes, and only Epson can tell us, what you are referring to as aniline dyes are what are called azo dyes, meaning they contain a certain nitrogen segment (nitrile) derived from azo benzene, or aniline. They are not usually soluble in water, making them "fast" dyes. Also, very potent, are are a huge family - all with very long names spelling out the other molecule segments which impart certain colors. Most all aromatics, including benzene - and derivatives (the high octane component in gasoline) are carcinogenic over the long haul, but these mostly are the intermediates of the final compound. I believe, and someone else can corroborate, that azo dyes used in the graphics industry are approved by an industry group for use. Normal use, that is. The solvent is usually alcohol, not sure if methyl (toxic) or ethyl (yes, toxic in large quantities). >>Tobie: >>Are you sure the anilyde dyes are that poisonous, or the process of making >>them? >>Tell us, oh epson-inkjet list chemistry gurus!!! > >When I was in the candlemaking hobby the aniline dyes were the only option for >vivid colored wax.
