I have a Smart & Friendly which IS the 4416 with a different label on the
machine.  In fact, Windows even reports it as a 4416. It has been just fine; I
have had no problems.  I think that S&F is probably better on service too, but
so far I can't vouch for it.  When the 4416 first came out, they had some
problems, but as far as I've read they have long since corrected them.

Plextor has the best reputation of all drives when talking to the hotshot gurus.
They say it ain't no Caddy, it ain't no Mercedes, it is the Rolls Royce of CD
players/recorders.  Personally, I don't know, but the reputation is out there.
Of course, prepare to PAY for one.
