If you need to produce prints with specific colors the chart will come in handy. Say you want a logo to come out as PMS 185 (red). Plugging in PMS 186 in Illustrator, Quark or Photoshop will not get you that color. Output a chart using the settings you will be using for the final print, find the closest color to the target color and plug in that PMS color or convert to CMYK and plug in those values. Your output will match the color you picked off the chart.
