The "comparable scanner" part is the gotcha.

I know of no other low-cost film/negative
scanner that also scans small prints.  The
Photosmart is rather unique in that regard.

OTOH, if you give up the small-print scanning,
there are MANY other makes and models to 
choose from -- From Epson, Minolta, Polaroid,
Microtek, Canon, etc -- to name but a few.

Most of these use SCSI, and are most likely
dual-platform.  I know this to be the case
for the Microtek and Polaroid units, and
very likely the Minoltas as well.

The Olympus ES-10 is a parallel-port model,
so that's out of the running for your use.

Flatbed scanners are dirt cheap these days,
so I wouldn't choose the Photosmart on that
basis.
