Birmy has been well established and making ongoing sales for years, has the 
advantage of having written the original CMYK drivers for earlier Epson 
printers, and still can't manage to come up with good screening algorithms 
for 1440 dpi output, and has been quite slow in supporting 6 color and 
variable dot machines. This would lead one to assume that such features are 
not trivial. I've never met a Windows  driver I liked; it may be the drivers, 
or the protocol may not have what it takes... but I talk to the author of the 
Cactus RIP fairly frequently, I'll see what he says about this.
