Mike,

It sounds as though the printer drivers are not spooling the print file so
that it prints in the background; it seems to be printing directly to the
printer, thus preventing you doing anything else while you are printing. I
can't think why the installation of the Status Monitor should have done
this, but the switch for spooling or printing direct is in the Advanced
section of the Printer Properties dialog (it is on my 1270). Check that this
is set to Spool and Start printing after first page is spooled, and not set
to Print direct to printer.

You may have already done this, and if so, I can't think of another reason
at the moment.
