RE: file sizes ( was w2k ram limits)

Paul,

I am not attempting to argue with you. I can understand how a 16 bit scan
can increase file sizes ( and honestly was not considering high-bit scans at
all when I made my comments). But when I have scanned 6x7 format frames as
high-bit scans (albeit at only 2840 ppi) I got nowhere near that size file.
I did not realize that scanning such at 4000 ppi would increase the file
sizes by such a large factor.

If you need to do any manipulation or enhancements to the raw scan in a
pixel editing application, don't you have to reduce the file down to an
8-bit file to do many if not all those operations? Could you not rescale or
resize the 8-bit image to 200MB just as easily and with little quality loss
when working with it in the pixel editing application prior to sending it to
the lab therefore reducing the actual file size of the image file being
worked on in the pixel editing program?

have never had a medium format, large format, or 35mm scan even at maximum
optical resolutions of or anywhere near that size. I suppose it is possible
to get such a file size off a drum scanner.

no, I just use the Nikon 8000 m/f scanner. in 16bit (not 8 bit) and 4000
dpi, the scans are this size. Same goes for the Polaroid Sprintscan 120,
Minolta Scan Multi, etc. This is for 6x7, 6x9 would be larger still.

and before someone chips in, yes, I do need them that big, as they are for 5
ft x 4 ft Lightjet prints, and 200 Mb (in 8bit) is the recommended size by
my lab. Always better to have real pixels than interpolated ones anyway.

bests,

paul
