Profiles
I usually don't get in to the fray over subjects like this but here goes. We
all know that managing color is still not an exact science as of yet. I really
appreciate the people who have the talent and the ability to create software
that helps us produce consistent color on our desktops. Which in turn makes more
money for us by reducing waste and keeping customers happy.
Some people may have a commercial license that allows them to distribute
profiles but for the most part the standard user agrees to a license that does
not permit distribution of the profiles made by the software. The people that
create color management software have to eat just like the rest of us. If one
person bought the software and made profiles for everyone it would be like the
Bride that takes her wedding proofs to Kinkos for reprints and enlargements.
The only way Color Management is going to continue to improve for us and, in
turn, make our work more consistent is for honest people to pay for the software
that makes the profiles.
If you don't want to pay for profiles. Just find out, by trial and error, what
changes to make to your images before printing. Then apply the same changes
whenever you are printing with that combination of ink/paper manually to each
image. That is all profiles do anyway.
