I have been using a Spectrocam for over a year now and have found it very
reliable and dependable. I have no esperience with Gretag's unit of similiar
design, so unable to make any comparisons there. I purchased the Spe4ctrocam
because I already had the profiling software (Colorblind Matchbox+) and had
been making measurements wityh the ColorMouse 2 colorimiter. The ColorMouse
is also a very good measuring deviced but slow and tedious compared with the
Spectrocam. Furthermore, a colorimiter and a spectro are functionally
different in their measuring capabilities. I am finding the spectro much
more useful with a wider range of applications.
For instance, I am able to measure the white point of my viewing booth, and
the ambient light as well. Teamed up with Profile City's ICC Display
software I am getting excellent monitor profiles, better than with three
other monitor profiling systems that I have used. ICC Display and the
Spectro work equally well with flat panel displays and CRT's.
A little practice is required at first in order to get consistent results
from dragging the Spectro across rows of color patches when making profile
measurements. There is room for improvement here, I believe, but I have
learned to work with it and can whip through 700+ color patches fairly
quickly. I understand that the Gretag unit functions is much the same way
and share a few of the same ideosyncracies.
