1270 not printing

Eddie, Powell, or anyone else who has an answer,

I've got two 1270's. One is fine; but the other is behaving very strangely.
It stopped a while ago with all lights flashing. Following the previous
advice on-list, I cleaned and lubed the rod, pressed both buttons while
switching on and then holding the cleaning button in for 10 secs.

That has returned the printer back to normal but for one slight thing; no
ink comes out of the head during printing!! It moves over the paper properly
where the printing should be, so it's clearly getting all the image info,
but nothing is coming out of the head while printing.

I've removed the pizza-wheel plate and can see that ink is coming out of the
head during a cleaning cycle, and I can see the vacuum pump pull the ink
down into the tank. The tank has hardly any ink in it and the pads are
mostly clean and dry to the touch (the printer has not been used much), so
it can't possibly have stopped for a full waste tank.

So if ink can be squirted out during a cleaning cycle, why not while
printing?

Is there any other magic sequence of buttons that switches on the print head
for printing?

Any ideas gratefully received.
