Best thinking on Black & White digital printing?

I currently use an Epson 870.   It can print sharply and seamlessly enough
for my purposes but it cannot print neutral grayscale Black & White prints.

Is there a different ink set I can get for this printer that will print
neutral grays and not clog the heads?  Is it better to get a 4-color Epson
(1160?) and dedicated gray-scale inks for this?   I would like to be able to
just use one printer but this is not critical.

Any good sites or products?
