I'm a wildly enthusiastic 2000p user!!! And I print primarily
black-and-white prints!!! Yes, yes, I've heard about the metamerism,
I've even seen fantastically depressing examples of such; however, I've
only ever gotten my digital studio to produce one of those monsters. I
am now becoming convinced that the metamersim (isn't it just too cool
that the word itself isn't even in my spell-check? ;-) I love modern
technology.) is the combined product of: original image, system,
software and digital darkroom technician method.
Unfortunately, for you lot, I haven't been able to spend the time
necessary to compile really useful data from which to extrapolate
parameters - there are quite a few variables, aren't there? I will tell
you that the green tinted print I got came from a 35mm neg of Kodak's
T400CN (process C-41), scanned under the "color" option and corrected
with both levels and curves formulas specifically designed to eliminate
colorcast. However, when I re-scanned the same neg as "grayscale" and
corrected it after converting to monochrome with a custom channel mixer
formula it printed a gorgeous black-and-white. Go figure.
Of course I realize that the ink is part of the equation, but I now
believe that there are very functional workarounds. Honestly, both my
clients and I love the finished prints.
Best,
Elizabeth
