Good news,
after 4 hours on the netbook a kernel with a single modification (CONFIG_BLK_DEV_LOOP=m) does the job for kubuntu jaunty jackalope 32bit.
The next step would be full disk encryption using the initrd tools.
It would be fine if ubuntu offered a kernel with CONFIG_BLK_DEV_LOOP=m. Any chance?
