Apparently, work is underway to enable BRLTTY to be run within Grub 2 (see
recent discussions on the BRLTTY list).

If this project is successful, working braille output will be possible at the
Grub prompt, given a serial or USB connection to a braille display.

Developments in UEFI are worth watching also.
