accessibility of java applets

How accessible are java applets on either windows or linux using either 
firefox or internet explorer.  For screen reader I have either orca or 
nvda depending on the platform.  If accessible what do I need to make them 
work.  What we are trying to do is access a set of computers via citrix 
vpn and it uses a lot of java applets.
