Gateway errors

Hello list,
I have an asterisk instalation with a bad internet connection causethis connection is down sometimes.When the connection is down and asterisk cannot get internetconnection. All the extensions log out from the asterisk machine, andnobody can make any call.
¿Why if internet connection is down asterisk stops working correctly?¿How could I solve that?
