Indeed, typical examples for OpenSER are Load Balancing of clusters of 
Asterisk servers (see here a nice tutorial 
http://www.opensips.org/Resources/DocsTutLoadbalancing on that)

or fronting for security, protocol exchange (TCP/TLS), HA concerns, etc.
