how to build a cross-compile-toolchain?

hello everyone, i know this is a stupid question,but really i don't know
how,i got a book named "building embedder linux systems" published by
O'reilly but glibc and gcc versions the writers used for example is too old
that when i tried to use gcc 4.2.1 and glibc 2.6,  i failed....

would you be kind to tell me how or tell me where to get a how-to document
for that?
