The cm-x270 is fairly well supported in the mainstream kernel, so
there is really no reason to not run 2.6.24/25.  I maintain
OpenEmbedded support for the cm-x270, and there is a few additional
patches available in the OE source tree:

Yes, the cm-x270 is fairly well supported in OE:

You can also boot from USB flash disk or NFS, and then install an
image to the NAND flash.
