Sorry for being ignorant but where is smsc911x upstream? Or did you mean the smc911x driver? I tried the smc911x and it behaves in more or less the same way as the smsc911x - packets do get sent but the driver does not see any incoming packets. I'm starting to lean towards faulty HW again, but I just got a binary kernel from ARM that should settle the issue.
