What you actually mean is, the LCD driver configuration is correct for
2.6.18, and you haven't checked to see if anything has changed in the
LCD driver between the two kernel versions.

Two hints:

1) The LCD driver is probably causing a change in console availability,
   which means that you may not be getting an OOPS as the console is
   locked. Try with just a serial port as console

2) Check what changed in the LCD drivers and any users of them in the
   kernel, you will find what you are looking for.
