AT91 gpio and serial

Hi,

I have seen in at91rm9200_devices.c that some serial port has been
implemented with complete pinout

usart0 (with rts and cts)
usart1 (with all serial port lines, rts,cts,ri,...)

I need to use some of this lines as gpio and not as uarts pins. 
Is it possible to register usart0 and usart1 as simple uart with only rx and
tx inside the board-xxxxx.c?
or only solution is patching atmel_serial.c?
