Why is it non-functional?  It works perfectly here.  Did you remember
to install the dependency file that modprobe requires along with your
modules?

Since you built your own kernel, it'll be in with the kernel, provided
you enabled it in your configuration.

It only looks for the legacy insmod and modules if you don't have modprobe
installed.

You're really making things hard on yourself if you decide not to use
modprobe...
