wav plays fast and crackles : pxa255

hi all 
i am writing audio driver for wm8731 audio chip on pxa255 custom board.I played a test wav file
in this way
  cat test.wav > /dev/dsp
  but it plays very fast and crackles a lot.
  can somebody tell me the  way of playing the wav file at proper speed.
