Hassle-free movie player recommendations?

I have just spent the last 2 to 3 hours trying to install xine 
(dependencies, recompiling etc...) and I was wondering how you all went 
about installing a movie player to play avi and other types? Is there 
something I am missing? Thanks in advance.
