This might be an APIC or interrupt routing problem.  Can you try
booting the machine with "linux noapic" to see if things work?
 
Do you get a specific error message when the aic7xxx driver is loaded?
Are there messages on Ctrl+Alt+F3 or Ctrl+Alt+F4?  Need more to go on
than "won't load".
