Sound still not working after 1.0.22.1 update

I have managed to Download / Compile / Install the upgrade, but still no
sound, and now i can't log in to Gnome (Xfce still works)

i have a VIA VT82xx based onboard card

any ideas as to what has gone wrong ? from the log i noticed that the driver
version was still 1.0.20 is this correct ? i wonder why that didn't update ?
can i force it somehow ?
