Continental Air postpones adding flights to Israel

Monday April 8, 10:29 AM EST

JERUSALEM, April 8 (Reuters) - Continental Airlines said on Monday it has
postponed the addition of three extra weekly flights on its New York-Tel
Aviv route that was planned to begin in May due to the increase in regional
violence.

"Continental will continue monitoring the market and will respond to the
commercial needs as required," said Barry Simon, Continental's international
senior vice president, in a statement.

"The Tel Aviv route has been and still is one of the more successful routes
within the Continental international network."

A spokeswoman for Continental in Tel Aviv said its load factor, which
measures capacity utilisation, is about 80 percent on average for its seven
weekly flights in each direction between Newark and Tel Aviv.

Last year Continental said it would increase its weekly flights to 10 in
time for the busy summer season. But in the wake of an 18-month Palestinian
uprising and the September 11 suicide attacks, tourism to Israel has
plunged.

"Continental remains committed to the Israel market in general and
specifically to the business community," said senior Israel country manager,
Avi Friedman. He noted Continental just began upgrading its business class
cabin on its Israel route.

Before the uprising, when tourism was strong, Continental operated two daily
flights on the route, using 276-seat Boeing 777s.
