JFK International Airport Project Nets Award

The Consulting-Specifying Engineer

The redesign and construction of the JFK International Terminal 4 earned
the Grand Conceptor Award in the 36th annual Engineering Excellence
Awards (EEA) competition sponsored by the American Council of
Engineering Companies (ACEC). The awards were presented to New York
City-based team of TAMS Consultants, Inc., and Arup, who worked in
conjunction to deliver the project.

The Grand Conceptor Award, the competition's highest honor, was awarded
in recognition of the facility's transportation design. The New York
Association of Consulting Engineers has also recognized the project for
its innovative information technology systems.

This $1.4 billion design-build project involved the largest
public/private partnership in U.S. history. Completed in May 2001, the
new 1.5-million-square-foot international air terminal can accommodate
3,200 passengers per hour. The facility has 16 gates, with expansion
options for up to 32 gates, and parking for more than 1,000 vehicles.
The project was completed on a fast-track schedule without interrupting
the continued operation of the airport, and was completed in 4.5 years,
which is half the time of similar terminal upgrades.

"Terminal 4 at JFK Airport sets a new standard for redeveloping airport
facilities and other facets of our nation's aging infrastructure," says
ACEC Chairman Stephen G. Goddard. "The project team's close
collaboration and technical skill offers solid proof that the expedited
design and construction process produces high-quality results."

ACEC's EEA competition annually recognizes outstanding achievements by
engineering firms in the areas of building and technology systems,
structural systems, surveying and mapping technology, environmental,
water and wastewater, water resources, transportation, studies and
research and special projects.
