You'll ned to hybridize the iso in order to boot by just using 'dd':

http://www.syslinux.org/wiki/index.php/Doc/isolinux#HYBRID_CD-ROM.2FHARD_DISK_MODE

It's not the same to create an iso for DVD burning that for using it
on a pendrive.
