Yes, I realise that I mixed up vmlinux and initrd files.  As someone
else corrected a bit later on, the vmlinux is the kernel common to
anyone installing that package, and the initrd is the bit that's built
to suit your own installation when the kernel is installed.  You'd have
a different vmlinux if you compiled your own kernel, rather than
installed a prebuilt one.

The original poster could probably have got their system working simply
by replacing that file (if it's disappearance was the only problem).
Then, perhaps, doing an install of a new kernel to ensure the other
related bits get cleanly sorted out.

I always kept three or more kernels installed on my system.  That allows
me to go back to a known working one, quite easily, should something get
stuffed up.  And having more than one computer gives you the further
options of having files to copy from another installation, or yanking
the drive and using the other computer to fix the broken one.
