I really don't know why a regular desktop user is forced to have such infrastructure installed and operational out of the box only to allow some poorly designed programs to pass messages to the user. I think it's one of that old UNIX approaches that need to be revised and changed to better suite desktop Linux users. I think you can disable sendmail service (it is not installed by default in Debian) but removing package might break some other package dependencies so don't do it. Mateusz Marzantowicz
