dock condensing broken in Fedora 8

   Has anyone else seen the following issue? After doing a
long delayed yum update on Fedora 8, we are now finding
that the Gnome dock no longer condenses icons in it. Prior
to that update, after a certain number of entries in the
dock, the windows for the same program would be overlaid
so that they where accessible in a pop-up menu. Now the
additional windows just get added to the dock and the
icons in the dock get progressively smaller in width.
Is this fixable short of upgrading to Fedora 9 or 10?
