That works automatically here, too. So the issue would seem to be
custom to your system.
Are you using Gnome, KDE, or something else. Gnome has its own
auto-mounter, I think KDE still does, I don't know about others.
Have you set preferences for removable media? (Automatically mount,
automatically browse, etc.) Do you know where to set them?
Those are the first obvious things that I can think to ask about.
