Gr. 2-3, younger for reading aloud. Each book in the Understanding Simple Machines series presents one type of simple machine. A typical double-page spread includes a few lines of text on one page, and, on the other, a full-page, color photograph, including many pictures of children posed using the device under discussion. Every book includes a colorful diagram, a project related to the subject, a brief appended glossary, a bibliography, and a list of Internet sites. Levers explains the parts of a lever, the classes of levers, and how these simple machines are useful. Wedges discusses the parts of a wedge and its utility in applications such as axes, knives, scissors, doorstops, and zippers. With large print and an uncluttered format, the series will fill a demand for simple books on simple machines.
